Standing committees represent groups that must meet to address ongoing projects. Examples include landscape, social, facilities, newsletter and architectural committees. Ad hoc committees are temporary and serve to help the board of directors with a specific project and/or purpose.
By enlisting homeowners to participate in these committees, boards and management companies can unite all members for the overall good of the community. The board of directors defines rules and guidelines for all HOA committees. In addition, the board must approve work produced by the committees.
Committee involvement provides many benefits to the community:
- By participating on committees, homeowners gain greater appreciation for HOA issues.
- Homeowners learn how the HOA works, which simplifies the communication process for the board.
- The board can draw on a wide range of expertise, viewpoints and experiences among the homeowner population.
- The HOA may be able to save time and money by relying on members with specialized training, experience or expertise in certain areas.
Having everyone contributing at some point builds a stronger community. And, committee participation helps create camaraderie among HOA neighbors.
